Bob Polis

mission

Thalictrum makes software for Mac OS X. I believe it's the platform with the best overall user experience. I love quality in general and of software in particular. I love beauty of design combined with usability. I think Apple delivers these things in a way that has the competition lagging far, far behind. This is why Thalictrum supports Mac OS X exclusively. Period.

who is behind it?

I am Bob Polis, a software engineer programming the Mac since 1993.

Thalictrum exists since 2003, and has been a spare-time operation until May 2008, when things started to get a little more serious. It changed into a real company then, which developed websites for small companies in The Netherlands, mainly startups. I still had a part-time job next to it, to maintain some stability in income. Now, since November 2008, Thalictrum has gone full-time!

I have 3 different activities, which appear to really blend well together:

  1. designing & developing websites,
  2. giving programming courses as a teacher/lecturer,
  3. writing software for Mac OS X (and iPhone).

The first two are local activities, centered in The Netherlands, Europe. Writing software, however, is something which is not bound to a geographical location. The outcome of that activity can be seen here, at thalictrum.com.

After my financial situation has stabilized a bit, I'm planning to breathe much more life into thalictrum.com. The popular LAME encoder binaries really need to be updated to latest available version; my Lotsawords screensaver still is PowerPC code, and hence won't run on Intel Macs. Not only that, there's a list of new features that have been waiting too long already to be implemented for it. People have been asking about them since the product was launched in 2004 (gasp). And there's a number of goodies not published here before, for which it's time to see the light of day. Expect some changes during the coming months!

thalictrum?

The name Thalictrum comes from a plant with that name, of which you can see several photos and other images on this site. The company logo is derived from a thalictrum leaf.
